  • What is the history of CYFS?
Mrs. Gay Baker's story is one of compassion and determination. She is the founder and Executive Director of CYFS. Despite starting her career in corporate America, she faced a difficult decision when offered a layoff package. At that time, her young daughter needed a suitable daycare center, but her visits to several centers left her frustrated due to their substandard conditions. This made her realize that other parents in the community were also struggling to find quality childcare. With that, her idea of the first of two centers, Where Kidz Connect Academy, was born. With her layoff package money, Gay decided to take a leap of faith and start her own daycare center with a mission to offer exceptional care for kids, create one-on-one connections with parents and staff, and provide reasonable prices. She saw her organization as an extension of her clients' families and wanted parents to be happy and not feel inconvenienced. Her first center quickly grew to serve 90 kids! As her daycare center flourished, Mrs. Gay noticed another pressing need in the community - access to food. Being a selfless person, she envisioned creating a one-stop-shop resource to serve both clients and staff in need. She asked herself, "How can I help people get what they need with what I have?" Mrs. Gay's inspiring story reminds us of the power of empathy and how one person's compassion can make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. Now, Mrs. Gay works alongside employees, 10 volunteers, 6 board members, and countless partners to better serve the Dallas County communities through CYFS.

At our non-profit organization, we are proud to offer a wide range of programs and services designed to serve and support our community. In addition to our free meal program, we also offer an after-school feeding program for children and teenagers between the ages of 3 and 18. Another key program at our organization is our teenage mentorship program for boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 18. This program pairs young people with adult mentors who provide guidance, support, and positive role modeling, helping them to develop important life skills and build self-confidence. We also offer a range of monthly activities and events for veterans and seniors in our community, helping them to stay connected, engaged, and supported. And of course, we celebrate important holidays and occasions throughout the year, including Mother's Day, Father's Day, and our annual Back to School Drive and Giveaway.
  • What are the outcomes of your programs and services?
Our pantry service is an essential program for our organization, as we know that many families struggle with food insecurity and hunger. We have worked hard to establish partnerships with local grocery stores, food banks, and community members to ensure that we can provide a wide variety of nutritious and healthy food to those in need. In February 2023, we were thrilled to serve 566 households through our pantry service. This amounted to a total of 8,200 lbs of food, which we were able to distribute to those who needed it the most. We take pride in the fact that we are able to offer a lifeline to those who may be struggling to put food on the table. But what was even more heartening was that we were able to welcome 46 new households to our family in February. These are people who may have never accessed our services before, and we were able to show them that there is a community that cares and is willing to support them. This growth is a testament to the impact that our pantry service is making in the community, and we are committed to continuing to expand our services to meet the needs of those who need them the most.
  • Do you partner with other organizations?
Yes, we do partner with other organizations in the community to better serve those in need.
